Manchester City Three-Nil Manchester United: Hemp scores in City comfortable victory.
Much like the recent storm swept through the northern region the previous evening, the home side swept United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three goal victory for their manager's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their title credentials as they reinforced their place at the top of the table.
Consecutive Defeats for United
This scoreline represented successive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them seven points off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.
The Red Devils' capacity to balance domestic and continental football with a small team has been a widely debated topic since they qualified for the UCL. Reviewing the schedule, it always seemed this was the period that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed tired throughout, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.
Tactical Shifts
Marc Skinner had attempted to rotate the squad with a handful of changes. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all added vigor, although the omission of the in-form Melvine Malard to the bench was questioned.
The hosts, in comparison, have no such loading concerns. Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since healing from injury.
Dominant First Half
The storm clouds started to build for the United boss and his side from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the quality from Manchester City whose potent attack controlled and dismantled the opposition with a sublime opening period performance that saw them net a trio in just over twenty minutes.
This put the hosts firmly in control and saw the visitors struggling. In advance of this match, United had allowed just few in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the wake of Manchester City's offensive ingenuity.
Opening Threats
The warning signs came quickly when Miedema used her power to muscle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot wide. Hemp was at the core of everything early on, taking advantage of the space left by Riviere down the visitors' wing. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg kicked off the line.
The Red Devils had a number of forays forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the flanks but they could not challenge Yamashita. City, on the other hand, controlled the ball, probing their opposition and trying to lure them of their defensive shape.
Scoring Spree
They converted their dominance with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A delivery to the back post was headed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was City’s 7th goal from a cross of the campaign.
They increased their advantage with an additional two goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was permitted to maraud through the center from the back, the play became spacious for City. The key Casparij collected the pass on the wing before delivering a pinpoint driven ball for Shaw to tap home. Shortly later, they had a additional score after a rapid change in the ball saw Hemp given the space to drive a shot home from range.
After the Break
The clearest substitution came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the match. Former City player Jess Park came closest, striking the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and were unable to produce a one shot on goal.
The home side, in contrast, could have extended their advantage when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Previously unable to beat any side who finished above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a commanding situation after nine games.
