The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged Generations Between Music Fans

It has been two decades after Guitar Hero hit the market in North America, giving everyday gamers the opportunity to become a rock star. Not in reality, but try convincing anyone who has mastered Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break before an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by Harmonix, the game provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues moving along the display in time with a song. Each riff corresponded to particular chords, producing the feel of a genuine performance.

The studio previously experimented in the music genre before partnering with the publisher, which was purchased by the gaming giant in 2006. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for an unlikely billion-dollar series which made a significant influence on numerous musicians included, introducing decades-old bands to a new generation of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles of licensing the songs – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music because the dollar figure prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the publishing rights alone, it proved nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was fairly certain it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero took off, album purchases and radio play increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He adds: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many mothers and fathers reached out and thanked us for introducing their kids to the songs they loved. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Gains a New Audience

Irish group one featured act had their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist remembers how the series revived classic rock back into vogue: “The game provided a bigger, younger audience. Generally such music was seen as music that was past it, but then when it was featured on the title and teenagers discovered it, suddenly it was cool. This validated it, and got rid of the outdated label. It provided all our music a new life.”

In 2008, the band's first record remained unreleased stateside, meaning the game was a key medium for exposure for the group during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “Their crew were playing the song during travel, and some of them knew us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Influence

Music's biggest acts quickly took advantage of the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in dedicated game editions that focused on their music collections and related lore, imagery and legendary status. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly earned the band more money compared to their studio albums. It sold more than half a million units upon release, while sales of their songs saw an increase significantly at a time when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered fanaticism within the community. Recently, a streamer completed an impressive attempt featuring the challenging track – a notoriously difficult anthem made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with almost identical gameplay and extensive personalization features. The song is challenging enough on the hardest setting, let alone performed at double speed while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated requiring nine months to accomplish.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. If you play other games, it doesn't imply you ought to pick up actual weapons and go to war,” notes DragonForce guitarist the artist.

DragonForce previously wrapped up a profitable run before Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I remember our distributors calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we performed just before the headliners at the event.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game proved so vast that it threatened to overshadow all other the band has done. Last year, the song featured in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I felt differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only hear a single track, that's fine – everyone’s got their own musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Legacy of a Plastic Guitar

Top-tier marketing, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, extends beyond mere transactions – it evokes a desire. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” he confirms. “The excitement of being a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive human desire to make music, and they wanted to use technology to allow people to do it”.

The majority installments came out over a mere five-year period from 2005 to 2010, featuring derivative titles like the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and Band Hero. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, aside from a brief comeback in 2015.

Games like Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the scene alive, with expectations of something from the original publisher in development. A new studio has entered work on its debut music game. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Is the world ready to embrace a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed those games might become like Madden where you can update every year,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant fresh tracks that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been optimistic. It's entirely possible for it to continue with new generations.”
