Toy Story 5 Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Tablet Computer
Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story movie was released, launching Pixar as a major film company and introducing viewers to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the plot but leaving viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang
In the teaser shows Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — getting a brand new plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.
Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
An element the trailer doesn't touch on is what Woody is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (the actress), traveling with a carnival and helping prize toys find good homes.
Certainly, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him appear in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip shows the badge pinned to her outfit.
Hopefully she is remains the key figure among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
